Essay on Beliefs and Conflict in Things Fall Apart
Things Fall Apart is a story about personal beliefs and customs and also a story about conflict. There is struggle between family, culture, and religion of the Ibo people which is all brought on by a difference in personal beliefs and customs. There are the strong opinions of the main character, Okonkwo. We are also introduced to the views of his village, Umuofia. Finally, we see how things fall apart when these beliefs and customs are confronted by those of the white missionaries. Chinua Achebe is a product of both native and European cultures. This has a great effect on the telling of the story. When he tells the story with an understanding and personal experiences in both cultures. He does not portray the African culture and theirâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is an example of the difference in personal beliefs among family. Some may say that the book is about the differences in beliefs between the Africans and the colonizers, but it is more than that. It is clear that it was Okonkwos personal beliefs and not necessarily the views of the people of Umuofia which guided him in what he did. One of these is his reliance in the strength of anger. Although he felt strongly in the beliefs and customs of the Ibo people, there are several occasions in which Okonkwo made a decision to disobey the customs in order to live out his own personal beliefs. For example, in chapter four, Okonkwo is yelled at by Ezeani, the priest of the earth goddess, for beating his wife during the sacred week of peace. Okonkwo did not feel remorse for his actions and probably thought of it as a sign of strength and manhood. Okonkwo was always worried about being seen as weak. One good 3 example of this is when he kills Ikemefuna. Okonkwo liked the boy because he saw several good qualities in him that he wished his own son possessed. He had to be killed because of one of their customs. When it came time to kill Ikemefuna, Okonkwo delivered the second and final blow from his machete and killed the boy so that people would not think that he was weak. After Ikemefuna was killed, Okonkwo was unable to eat or drink for days because he was upset. Education, voting, working were three things women could not do. Before the late 1800ââ¬â¢s women had mimited rights. As the years past by women slowly gained priviledges that men already had. In the early 1900ââ¬â¢s few women attended finishing schools called Female Seminaries. Later on the women who did attend state universities around 1863 had to live with being discrimintated against and being ridiculed. By the end of the 19th century female docotor and lawyers became more common. By The New Nationalism women got the right to vote in elections. Today womens rights have prgressed emensly. From not being able to tend school and get an education and not being able to have a job or vote women have gained all those rights. Now women are able to have higher paying jobs, full educations and vote for whoever they want. As apposed to long ago when they could only stay at home and cook. Now women are moving up in the ranks of the job industry. Some making more pay then males and being at higher rank. For example the Us has women comprise about a quarter of the UA facitlity. They are also moving up the rank to higher-paying staff posisions, more than 10 years ago. Although there are still more males, the women have increased tons over the last century. And as the studies show the women will still be rising in the future. From the past to the future women have gained more power over the years. From going to no rights at all women have gained as many rights as males have. Although some jobs are made for a man to work, women have the right to try and work there if that what they want to do. From reading the text book and reading the news article it is shown that we can make things happen. As women progressed over the years and fought for their rights as females, they won. I dont think anything will change in the future for women because they are already treated to the equal amount that men are. People across the US should know about this so they know they too can make a difference in the future. How to cite Growth of Real Women, Papers

Learning Styles Essay Example
Learning Styles Essay Rationale Every person has its own uniqueness making everyone different from each other which means that in everything people do, they vary from each other. For the students, they learn in different ways as well as their capability to acquire knowledge. This situation refers to as ââ¬Å"learning stylesâ⬠which is defined as ââ¬Å"the concept that individuals differ in regard to what mode of instruction or study is most effective for themâ⬠(Pashler, et. al. , 2008, p. 105). This is similar to the studentsââ¬â¢ preference on his/her way of learning in a particular area. Various learning styles have been used by many students as their approach to attain information and to process this to learn. One model of learning styles is the Flemingââ¬â¢s VAK Model which is sometimes known as the VARK model. In an article published by Gable (2010) written by a writer named ââ¬Å"nlee31â⬠, the Flemingââ¬â¢s VAK Model was presented; the visual learning style (V), the auditory learning style (A) and the kinesthetic learning style. The visual learners are skillful at looking charts, graphs or any instructional visual material and they can apply it to their school projects. Auditory learners are skilled through listening with good memory and use of information. Lastly, kinesthetic learners learn best through application. Learning styles is known as a validation to determine that students perform in class and achieve something in different manners. As to their academic performance, these learning styles were used in all the subject areas. The students learn in a variety of way as a result of the teachersââ¬â¢ style of conveying information. Mathematics is only one of the subject areas that students take up in college. During the tertiary level, most students find learning this area as the most difficult part. Difficulty may result to inattentiveness and poor performance of students in a class may occur. Learning styles in Mathematics can be different among students. It is very important that a student is aware of his/her learning style such that he/she will be able to assess himself/herself in an environment of different learners. In a study of Al-Balhan (2010) entitled ââ¬Å"Learning Styles in Relation to Academic Performance in Middle School Mathematicsâ⬠, the results show that students in the experimental group whose learning styles were accommodated performed better than the students in the control group who studied using the traditional method. Finding college students having difficulties in learning mathematics is a challenge for the instructors to develop teaching strategies which is creative and innovative. The instructorsââ¬â¢ knowledge of their studentsââ¬â¢ learning styles will serve as the general guide for them to have revisions and vary the activities to be given to the students. Also, Munshin and Huentick (2008) emphasized ââ¬Å"The foundational belief in attention to learning styles is that if teachers understand their preferred learning styles and those of their students, they will be able to adjust their curriculum and teaching methods to accommodate students with different learning styles. â⬠The effort of meeting the needs of the students according to their learning styles may eventually leads to the development of the course in College Algebra; thus, determining the studentsââ¬â¢ learning style is a very important part of this. Blackmore (1996) in Diaz and Cartnal (1999, p. 30-135) suggested that one thing an educator can do to assist the learning process is to be simply aware that there are diverse learning styles in the student population. Just like the other studies relating learning styles and academic performance, this study specified only one subject area, College Algebra. At Saint Maryââ¬â¢s University, College Algebra is one of the courses where all students have gone through. As compared to other researches, this study will only focus in College Algebra. It would like to determine the dominant learning style present among the Education freshmen as related to their College Algebra performance. If the students would be accommodated properly, especially those who performed least, they would increase their mathematical ability in studying Algebra. Also, the generated new teaching style of the instructors may help the future students and so to excel much better than before. The connection between the present and the future Education freshmen is that they both have taken the same subject as the College Algebra is a brief review of High School Algebra (e. g. Elementary Algebra as stressed out in the Modern College Algebra Textbook by Mrs. Adelina C. Erfe, pg. v). Hence, this reason serves as the motivator for the researchers to conduct this study: ââ¬Å"Titleâ⬠. Statement of the Problem This study was designed to determine the relationship between the learning styles of the freshmen Education students of Saint Maryââ¬â¢s University and their College Algebra performance measured in their final grade during the first semester of the academic year 2010-2011. Specifically, the study sought to answer the following question: 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of their: a. final grade in College Algebra; b. and learning styles of the respondents? . How are the learning styles of the respondents distributed when classified according to their final grade in College Algebra? 3. Is there a significant relationship between the learning styles of the respondents and their final grade in College Algebra? Statement of Null Hypothesis This statement is to be tested at a 0. 05 level of significance: 1. There is no significant differen ce between the learning style of the respondents and their final grade in College Algebra. Significance of the Study This study may be beneficial to the following: 1. College Algebra Instructors Results of this study may generate ideas for the College Algebra Instructors to provide the correct teaching styles that can accommodate the studentsââ¬â¢ learning styles. This matching of their styles will make a learning environment which produces students with Mathematics competence. Also, the instructorsââ¬â¢ can have that teaching that they will be using whenever, most probable, some students may be under them in the future. 2. Future College Algebra Students of School of Education Learning of College Algebra by future freshmen students of School of Education will be much easier than before. The students may respond accordingly as their learning styles will be accommodated. 3. Education Students Having probability that some of these students, especially the Mathematics majors, will be under the same instructor again, they will be, at least, taught properly just like the future Education freshmen students. Scope and Delimitation This study is to determine the relationship of the learning styles of the 60 Education freshmen students of Saint Maryââ¬â¢s University to their College Algebra final grade for the first semester of the academic year 2010-2011. The study will only classify and relate the studentsââ¬â¢ learning styles and College Algebra final grade. Used teaching style of their former instructors will not be studied to relate with the two variables mentioned above. Also, the study will not include the interpretation on the relationship of the respondents to the future Education freshmen. Definition of Terms The following words in this study were defined for clarity and common understanding: 1. Relationship ââ¬â the study defines this as a connection or association between the two variables if the studentsââ¬â¢ learning styles have an effect on their performance in College Algebra. . Learning Styles ââ¬â the study defines this as the studentsââ¬â¢ way of acquiring information, interacting with the instructors and participating in class. 3. Respondents ââ¬â the study defines this to refer to the current freshmen students of the School of Education who have taken and finished College Algebra. 4. College Al gebra Performance ââ¬â the study defines this as the respondentsââ¬â¢ final grade in College Algebra. 5. College Algebra ââ¬â this is a course taken by all freshmen (Engineering Algebra for the Engineering freshmen) which is closely related to secondary Algebra. 6. Teaching Styles ââ¬â the study defines this as the methods, strategies and approaches of the instructors to convey information to their students. 7. Visual Learning Style ââ¬â the study defines this as the learning style of students which is more on to seen or observed things such as graphs and diagrams. 8. Auditory Learning Style ââ¬â the study defines this as the learning style of students which is more on to listening information such as listening to spoken words. 9. Kinesthetic Learning Style ââ¬â the study defines this as the learning style of students which is more on to physical experiences such as practical type of lectures. Do I forget faces but remember names all the time, I donââ¬â¢t if itââ¬â¢s age thing or just too much on my mind. I remember when I was younger I could remember names, not faces. At this point in time in my life I prefer the telephone instead of face-to-face direct contact. I am still out- going with a reserve tone to it, if that make since. 10 Things to Know about Dating Your College Classmate
10 Things to Know about Dating Your College Classmate 1. You Change Throughout College Whether itââ¬â¢s the kids that come in fresh out of high school or those that wait until later in their twenties, four years of undergraduate studies changes a human being. Youââ¬â¢re one way when you arrive, and another way when you leave. Think about how much youââ¬â¢ll have learned! With that said, it makes dating somewhat more difficult for most students. Thereââ¬â¢s so much going on. So many deadlines. So many choices. Typically a large dating pool where everyoneââ¬â¢s hooking up with someone. Just remember that if you hook up with someone early on in your freshmen year, the relationship must be able to adapt as you both change as people. 2. Many Different Shades of Grey Youââ¬â¢ve got to be precise when it comes to college dating. Letââ¬â¢s look at the four most common types or definitions: Courting: Youââ¬â¢re both digging on one another and itââ¬â¢s obvious to everyone thereââ¬â¢s something going on, but itââ¬â¢s not serious yet. Youââ¬â¢re still getting to know both yourselves and each other. Exclusive: Itââ¬â¢s official, everyone else has to keep their hands off of both of you. Social lives can easily begin to suffer here, which isnââ¬â¢t necessarily a great idea in college where youââ¬â¢re supposed to be getting out there and involved. Temporary: Youââ¬â¢re exclusively dating but thereââ¬â¢s no illusions. Once the graduation dates come youââ¬â¢re both going your separate ways. It means you wonââ¬â¢t have to deal with being single, but there isnââ¬â¢t a post-college long-term commitment either. However, there are still some ways to save your relationships after graduation. Fling: Also known as the fresh, sophomore, junior and senior year fling. Yeah, they can happen every year. Typically around spring. Youââ¬â¢ve been eyeing one another all year in college or passing by in the halls or whatever, and finally youââ¬â¢re hooking up for the summer. 3. A Long Term Question In America, more than half of the ladies walking around campus everyday secretly or publically hope to meet their spouse while in college. As you might have guessed, that number tends to be a bit lower with college guys. Most of them arenââ¬â¢t thinking much farther ahead than mid-terms, or this coming Friday night. 4. Dating can get Expensive! Unfortunately, for the vast majority of college students out there today, dating isnââ¬â¢t really a viable financial prospect. Not serious dating anyhow. Going out get be pricey enough. When possible, keep dating as humble as possible. 5. Grades Could Suffer Once people begin throwing the ââ¬Å"Lâ⬠word around, things could get complicated. What if thereââ¬â¢s a pregnancy? If grades are a high priority, then keep it that way and make sure that dating doesnââ¬â¢t cause you to completely divert from your long term goals. 6. Guys and Girls Are not at the Same Page While most girls think of relationships as committment to the other person and love, most guys dont strive for anything serious in college and approach relationships as fun. This is about not about good or bad its just the fact caused by differences in gender psychology. Both boys and girls should find balance between having fun and serious commitment and discuss their expetations from the relationships before jumping into things too quickly. 7. Be a Yes Person Itââ¬â¢s college. If someone asks you out you nod and say, ââ¬Å"yes.â⬠Simple. Obviously there are exceptions, but as a general rule you should be taking every single opportunity that comes your way to make friends, learn about new people and set up college networks of friends. Give people a chance you normally wouldnââ¬â¢t. Remember, after college itââ¬â¢s all about who you know. 8. Expectations are Poisonous When dating in college itââ¬â¢s best to keep the expectations at a minimum for the first few months. Is it a fling? Are you expecting a relationship from someone who is in a transitional phase of their life? Are they expecting you to wait and be faithful while theyââ¬â¢re in Europe for six months without you? Itââ¬â¢s best to keep your priorities in line and go with the flow. 9. Date Outside Your Major Whenever possibly try to dating someone in finance or marketing. If youââ¬â¢re in finance or marketing, go for a philosophy major. Iââ¬â¢m kidding. But honestly, try not to get yourself stuck inside a little bubble where you never leave your own area of study. Date someone from a completely different major. Mingle! Get to know and make friends with people in as many different majors as possible. 10. Online College Dating? Is it really even online dating if you go to the same college? Hey, these days if you have issues with going to parties or trying to ask out people in your classes, then hop online and reach out to them that way. At this point, thereââ¬â¢s nothing abnormal about it. ââ¬Å"Hey, arenââ¬â¢t you in my 9am English class?â⬠You can engage people in texting conversations and Facebook updates without having to get up close and personal. Overall, dating in college can be tricky for some, and easy for others. Make sure to live it up! Have you ever dated someone in your class? What that easy or not? Share your experience in the comments section!

How to Petition the Government Online
How to Petition the Government Online Got a gripe with the government? Exercise your rights. Congress is prohibited from restricting the right of American citizens to petition the government under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1791. ââ¬Å"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.â⬠- The First Amendment, United States Constitution. The authors of the amendment surely had no idea just how easy it would become to petition the government in the age of the Internet more than 200 years later. President Barack Obama, whose White House was the first to use social media such as Twitter and Facebook, launched the first online tool allowing citizens to petition the government through the White House website in 2011. The program, called We the People, allows users to create and sign petitions on any topic. When he announced the program in September 2011, President Obama said, ââ¬Å"When I ran for this office, I pledged to make government more open and accountable to its citizens. Thats what the new We the People feature on WhiteHouse.gov is all about - giving Americans a direct line to the White House on the issues and concerns that matter most to them.â⬠The Obama White House often portrayed itself as one of the most transparent to the public in modern history. Obamas first executive order, for example, directed the Obama White House to shed more light on presidential records. Obama, however, eventually came under fire for operating behind closed doors. We the People Petitions Under President Trump When Republican President Donald Trump took over the White House in 2017, the future of the We the People online petition system looked doubtful. On January 20, 2017 - Inauguration Day - the Trump administration deactivated all existing petitions on the We the People website. While new petitions could be created, signatures to them were not being counted. While the website was later fixed and is currently fully functional, the Trump administration has not responded to any of the petitions. Under the Obama administrationââ¬â¢s control, any petition that collected 100,000 signatures within 30 days was to receive an official response. Petitions that gathered 5,000 signatures would be sent to the ââ¬Å"appropriate policymakers.â⬠à The Obama White House said any official response would be not only by emailed to all petition-signers but posted on its website as well.à While the 100,000 signature requirement and White House response promises remain the same under the Trump administration, as of November 7, 2017, the administration had not officially responded to any of the 13 petitions that had reached the 100,000 signature goal, nor has it stated that ità intends to respond in the future. How to Petition the Government Online No matter the White Houseââ¬â¢s response to them, if any, the We the People tool allows Americans over the age of 13 to create and sign petitions on www.whitehouse.gov asking the Trump administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. All that is required is a valid email address. People who wish to create a petition are required to create a free Whitehouse.gov account. To sign an existing petition, users need only enter their name and their email address. For identity verification, they will receive an email with a web link that they must click to confirm their signature. A Whitehouse.gov account is not needed to sign petitions. The We the People website calls creating or signing a petition as ââ¬Å"just the first step,â⬠suggesting that concerned citizens build support for a petition and gather even more signatures. ââ¬Å"Use email, Facebook, Twitter and word of mouth to tell your friends, family and coworkers about the petitions you care about, the White House states. As was the case under the Obama administration, petitions involving ongoing criminal investigations or criminal justice court proceedings in the United States and certain other internal processes of the federal government are not subject to petitions created on the We the People website. What It Means to Petition the Government The right of Americans to petition the government is guaranteed under the Constitutions First Amendment. The Obama administration, acknowledging the importance of the right, said: Throughout our nations history, petitions have served as a way for Americans to organize around issues that matter to them, and tell their representatives in government where they stand. Petitions played important roles, for example, in ending slavery and guaranteeing women the right to vote. Other Ways to Petition the Government Though the Obama administration was the first to allow Americans to petition the government through an official U.S. government website, other countries had already allowed such activities online. The United Kingdom, for example, operates a similar system called e-petitions. That countrys system requires citizens to collect at least 100,000 signatures on their petition on their online petitions before they can be debated in the House of Commons. The major political parties in the United States also allow Internet users to submit suggestions that are directed to members of Congress. There are also many privately run website that allow Americans to sign petitions that are then forwarded to members of the House of Representatives and Senate. Of course, Americans can still write letters to their representatives in Congress, send them email or meet with them face-to-face. Updated by Robert Longley

Human vs. Animals - Who Has The Power Research Paper
Human vs. Animals - Who Has The Power - Research Paper Example As discussed in the introductory paragraph, the planet of apes is divided into various sub-classes. Chimpanzees are considered suitable for research due to their intelligence, orangutans could take part in the administrative and religious affairs of the planet and gorillas were presented as the defenders. This segregation of class and roles is strictly observed by the inhabitants of the planet. This situation refers to the first segment of the movie where the astronauts were caught by the apes and were brutally treated. The captain of the flying shuttle was used for experimental purpose by a doctor. This segment defines the difference of class presented in the movie, as apes were dived into sub-classes and were allocated tasks according to their capabilities, while on the other hand humans were treated as sword fodders or lab rats. This could be referred to the turmoil situations of the earlyà twentieth century, when a law relating to racial discrimination had been passed. By the v irtue of which the white population of the country was segregated from the Afro-Americans of the country, referred to as Jim Crowââ¬â¢s law. It prohibited the black people to enter into any type of transaction with the white population, the taps for drinking water, toilets, hotels, restaurants, passenger seats and anything that could prove white superiority over the black had been segregated. The black population was considered to untouchable and the most down trodden part of the society, only jobs available for them were manual labor, as was the case with the humans in the movie. Law enforcement agencies treat convict of different races and castes differently, there was favoritism, nepotism, violence and hate by the supreme part of the society for the under-class, as the apes used to treat the humans in the movie.Ã
